Campaigns:

Long Branch Re-Replenishment

In May 2007, leaders from SEA and Surfrider Foundation met again with the Army Corps, State DEP, City of Long Branch and Congressman Pallone in an effort to work with them to modify this beachfill. We emphasized that we are not only interested in creating a surfing feature. We also want to reduce the width of the fill and therefore the negative effects of the fill. We believe it is possible that both can be accomplished. As a result of this meeting, the Army Corp is looking into reducing the width of the fill to 250 feet, and creating a sand point of up to 500 feet in front of Brighton Avenue. We don’t know if this will ultimately be approved but we are hopeful. There will be another meeting soon so stay tuned.

The Chapter is still considering asking for an updated Environmental Impact Study (EIS) regarding this project.

Take Action: Public participation is extremely important before any beachfill project can go forward. A bill in the NJ Assembly would make that a law. Please visit http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/NJ_Beachfill_Public_Hearings
